Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
