During his first term, commentators often suggested that the former president's remarks should be taken seriously rather than word for word. However, subsequent events indicate that that formula could have got it backwards.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy alongside multiple comments from U.S. figures, presidential allies, and the former president have sparked potentially one of the most severe challenges for transatlantic unity, the doctrine that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since World War II.

From Financial Contributions to Cultural Anxiety

While The initial critique centered on Europe's perceived refusal to fund its own defense, his rhetoric has now embraced a far more alarming outlook.

Tinged with racial prejudice and a staggering contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the potential of societal collapse on a continent he has rarely visited and has predominantly seen from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

This paranoid worldview, which has shaped contentious American border and policing policies, now appears to be shaping the administration's understanding of Europe.

The Racist Core

From this vantage point, immigration from developing nations causes a weakening of European countries, rendering them "feeble" under "stupid" leadership and paving the way for their demise. It constitutes an unabashedly racist theory, with the president's allies making clear their support for far-right political parties across Europe.

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is familiar, its meaning for European security are critically important.

In the view of the president and his adherents—a group that includes tech magnate Elon Musk, who has called for the breakup of the European Union—all politics is inherently transactional. However, while he once claimed was about burden-sharing, the current assertion is that a decadent Europe is undeserving due to its embrace of multiculturalism.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of rhetorical loop. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin wants a weak Europe. Trump proclaims Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the rifts between the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European unity—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at perhaps the most consequential moment for Europe in decades, with a devastating war in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions elsewhere on the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Ukraine facing persistent threats of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

This situation demands a robust response from capitals across Europe. Although certain figures, such as Germany's leader, have been forceful in their rebuttals, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have continued with a strategy of attempting to appease the U.S. administration.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to criticize Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

They said, "The Prime Minister has a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on working with both to achieve stronger results for the people."

The stark reality is that Trump means what he says and repeats them repeatedly. It is past time to stop pretending otherwise.
