Food Benefits Set to Cease for Over 40 Million Amid Ongoing Federal Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities declared this past weekend that nutrition assistance payments through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed next month because of the continuing federal government shutdown.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure lasted three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives pushing the department to utilize reserve accounts to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “At this time, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.

National Consequences

Over 40 million Americans depend on these monthly payments, as reported by official statistics. Various areas, such as one southwestern state, dependence on the program affects one-fifth of the population.

Internal communications seen by Reuters revealed that USDA officials would not access emergency reserves for the upcoming payments.

Partisan Impasse

Congressional leaders continue to disagree over how to finance and restart federal agencies.

Comments by the head of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that the White House had chances to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.

“They had the ability and responsibility made moves weeks ago to get ready to access these resources,” the statement continued. “Rather, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to vote for a funding package to restart the federal government.

Local Responses

Executives in Louisiana and Virginia declared states of emergency recently to allocate funds to address food insecurity expecting SNAP benefits not being issued in November.
