Gavin Newsom Blocks Parole for Manson Follower Longtime Inmate

Gavin Newsom again rejected release for Patricia Krenwinkel, who has served over five decades behind bars for her involvement in the notorious murders masterminded by Charles Manson.

Parole Reversal Draws Criticism

Nearly five months after the state parole panel found the 77-year-old fit for freedom, the governor reversed the decision and stated that Krenwinkel “currently poses an unacceptable risk to the public if freed from prison at this time.”

It was the second instance Newsom has blocked her parole, and the decision was met with sharp criticism from her legal representative, who claimed the governor chose “political motives over human considerations” and overlooked the abuse she suffered from the cult figure.

“Newsom’s reversal of Pat’s grant has no connection to the record of her transformation or the risk she poses,” stated Keith Wattley, her legal counsel. “It is 100% political, directly contrary to the facts and the governing regulations.”

Case History of the Murders

Krenwinkel was 21 when the Manson's followers carried out the murders of actress Sharon Tate and four others, among them heiress Abigail Folger and hairstylist Jay Sebring, and the following night murdered grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary LaBianca. In 1971, she and other Manson followers were convicted of multiple counts of murder charges for their involvement in the crimes.

Prison Transformation

Over many years behind bars – Krenwinkel is California’s longest serving female prisoner – she has reformed, supporters and attorneys have reported. She has obtained higher education and her conduct is spotless, her attorney noted, which was one of the reasons the parole board recommended her for release.

Krenwinkel has expressed remorse for her actions in the crimes. Previously, she stated: “I wish to express my deep regret I am for all the pain and suffering that I caused when I took the lives that I did … I strive daily to live amends … [and] work toward being a better person.”

Previous Mistreatment and Rehabilitation

A 2017 investigation by the authorities revealed she experienced abuse in multiple forms by the cult leader, her attorney noted, adding that she has found her “own identity, independence, and moral compass”.

Other Cases

Newsom has previously denied parole for other former cult members. Leslie Van Houten was released from state custody in recent years after 53 years when a state appeals court overturned the governor's ruling to block her parole.
