Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," the governor commented when pressed about contemplating a White House bid after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as governor ends in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is still years away.
"The future will decide," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
He has stepped forward as a prominent critic of the former president's team, leveraging his social media accounts and championing a proposition that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has made him a target from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a weekend segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and warned eliminating the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," Duffy declared, following a this week's fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen commercial driver that led to fatalities and injured individuals.
Newsom's office noted that the national authorities had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had earlier indicated he was holding back additional funds from California for ignoring linguistic standards for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a last month's release addressing the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A recently conducted poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of previous highs to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom remarked while visiting several key regions that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The notion that a person who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
