In excess of 60,000 Run from Sudan's City Following Capture by RSF Militia, UN States

Refugees fleeing conflict in the region
Numerous seek to get to the settlement of Tawila but encounter harassment, extortion and abuse from fighters during their journey

Per the UN refugee agency, in excess of 60,000 individuals have fled the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the paramilitary RSF recently.

Accounts suggest mass executions and crimes against humanity as militia members entered the city following an extended encirclement featuring famine and heavy bombardment.

The flow of those fleeing the violence towards the town of Tawila, roughly 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had increased in the past few days, according to United Nations refugee agency representative.

Survivors were describing horrendous stories of violence, featuring sexual violence, and the humanitarian group was finding it difficult to locate adequate shelter and food for them.

Each child was experiencing undernourishment, she commented.

Calculations indicate that in excess of 150,000 residents are currently unable to leave in el-Fasher, which had been the military's final bastion in the western part of Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces has disputed broad allegations that the deaths in el-Fasher are based on ethnic factors and mirror a trend of the Arab fighters attacking non-Arab populations.

However the RSF has custodied one of its fighters, Abu Lulu, who has been implicated in extrajudicial killings.

The force shared footage showing the fighter's detention subsequent to identification that he was involved in the execution of several civilians near el-Fasher.

Video sharing service has confirmed that it has suspended the channel connected to Lulu. It is not clear whether he had managed the account in his identity.

Sudan was entered a internal conflict in April 2023 after a intense power struggle erupted between its army and the RSF.

The conflict has led to a food crisis and allegations of mass killing in the Darfur area.

More than 150,000 persons have been killed in the war around the country, and about 12 million have fled their dwellings in what the United Nations has described as the biggest global humanitarian crisis.

The capture of el-Fasher reinforces the territorial division in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in dominance of the western region and a large portion of adjacent Kordofan to the south, and the military controlling the capital, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the coastal region.

The competing factions had been partners - taking over together in a seizure of power in 2021 - but fell out over an foreign-endorsed plan to advance to civilian rule.
