A study titled “Until Harm Stops” sent data inquiries to youth protection agencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Figures from 135 local authorities showed that out of two thousand three hundred thirty-five minors identified as having been exploited or potentially exploited, eight hundred sixty-four (thirty-seven percent) were listed as disappeared.

In total one hundred forty-one local authorities responded to questions about solo young asylum applicants in their care, who totaled eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine young people. Of these, one thousand five hundred one (thirteen percent) were reported missing.

Elevated Danger for Vulnerable Children

The analysis, released by non-profit organizations, warns that these populations are at “very high risk” of going missing from care.

Some exploited minors in the UK are local residents while others are from abroad.

They may have faced either abuse for sexual purposes or criminal exploitation, for example by county lines gangs.

Local authorities have a legal obligation to protect and assist exploited and lone minors under youth safety systems. Nonetheless, there is no publicly available federal data on the issue.

Calls for Action

Accommodation Concerns
