India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Haze After Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" level.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city showed an AQI over 500, which translates to ten times the healthy threshold established by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Changes

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that covers the city as colder weather sets in.

However recently, the newly elected regional leadership petitioned the judicial authority to propose a easing of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Court Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was considerable flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Many air quality sensors throughout the capital showed air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in Delhi have remained as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is resulting from a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Impact

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million residents living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand premature deaths per year in Delhi.
