Israelis have come together around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies distribution
  • Future administration of the territory

Public Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person return not a single person will feel safe."

"After we see everybody home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to heal," she added.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Activist a participant remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population want the war to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my youngest child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the south region of that area said another two fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the southern area, medics said.

The territory's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
