RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
