The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
