Our Leading Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Position.

Initially, this album might appear closer to a challenging academic quiz rather than the latest pop project from an artist who just had a last single was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Broken into 4 distinct movements and performed in 13 languages, we have a dizzying symphonic opus exploring feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, often through the prism of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is shot skyward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a vast roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone renders the work of other artists seem quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album manages to escape dry academic posturing is almost a miracle, and full praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to blend historical sounds with the present, its ambitions feel much higher here, and the balancing act more dramatic. What really raises her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she's tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on a stunning piano-led song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four moments. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes in with cartoonish impact. The song immediately segues to the frenetic track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—nor want to know—where it is going next."

Almost each song ends at a totally distinct place from where it started. One moment examines the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight symphony before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts off dark and sinister, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves straddling the gap between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is little coincidence that it has achieved her first release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in English builds around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spirals upward. This trick is echoed by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried gems that requires time to completely mine but never seem like hard work. Where other big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast where the guests around it, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
