The Danish government Establishes Special Monitoring Operation to Observe President Trump Following Greenland Row
Taking action reminiscent of TV series watches, the Danish foreign ministry has created a night watch team—far from guarding against fantasy foes, but to monitor Donald Trump as Copenhagen sleeps.
This night monitoring begins at 5pm local time daily and ends with a summary compiled at 7am, which is then distributed throughout the Danish government and relevant offices detailing what was said and developments that occurred.
The role is believed to have been established following the bilateral dispute involving Denmark and the US over Greenland this spring, when the American leader threatened acquiring control of the strategic island.
Observers point out that this initiative is one of several instances of how Danish diplomacy and its civil service have had to adapt to the changed landscape of the second Trump administration.
An insider close to the ministry remarked, “It is fair to say that the circumstances in Greenland and the time difference between Denmark and the United States was a significant factor introducing this system during the spring.”
Instead of all staff having to immediately check their devices to catch up on updates from the US, the ministry explained it had made a collective effort to remain informed on Trump activities.
An expert, a former chief analyst at the Danish defence intelligence agency, stated that this development showed, “as long understood,” that the notion of the US as Denmark's primary partner was dead. “Alliances are founded on shared principles and a common threat perception,” he added. “The president shares neither of those with us and I would argue he lacks it with the majority of Europe.”
