Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
