Two Cuba-Destined Relief Ships Declared Lost after Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive rescue and recovery mission is presently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of unlocated sailing vessels loaded with aid cargo en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Naval Search Missions Deployed
The Mexican government has sent naval teams and search planes to locate the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine total sailors, per a navy statement.
The boats had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.
The Situation of Aid to Cuba
Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their consular staff.
"The group is collaborating completely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Recent Humanitarian Mission
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had transported a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That vessel, called "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bikes and food.
Broader Geopolitical Context
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.
International organizations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Political measures have increased in recent months, with statements from various officials highlighting the complicated state of bilateral relations.
In response to previous comments, a prominent government figure declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that early stages of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the crews.
To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
