Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
