Zohran Mamdani states he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision promptly following his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will always live within me and the work I do," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
